Universum inanum is an accordion book that seeks to take an original poem and create a visual narrative. A compendium of textures were created using various mediums including acrylic, gesso, paper and spray paint. These textures were then combined with the poem’s stanzas, which used hand-cut letterforms of varying weights and sizes to provide contrast and hierarchy. Special attention was given to how the accordion book would look not only as a whole, but also how each section would function as a singular piece. Thus, the letterforms and the textures employed the background, midground and foreground to better activate the space and create a careful balance. This combination allowed for areas to alternate between a more delicate tone when the poem called for it and a rougher, more aggressive one when necessary.
